Flower seeds as gifts...

The cockscomb is a most unusual looking flower. It's easy to grow and flourishes during the heat of the summer. You simply pick the large clusters of blooms in early autumn and bring inside for drying. They dry beautifully.

I'm putting together a few seed packets to give as gifts.

I'll be creating a new seed packet for the assortment of seeds.

Zinnia, moon flower, brown eye susans, bee balm are some of the varieties I'll be sharing.

You may remember the seed packet I created last spring. It was inspired by my Great Aunt Enid. She was a natural garden guru and a wonderful cook.

This picture was taken last summer. It's the entrance to my home studio. A place where I share my creations with friends and patrons. I've been operating the shop from my home for 5 years now. Before that I owned and managed a shop downtown.
It's fun having a shop in your home! It's worked out great for me. If you're contemplating a home shop, I say go for it! It makes perfect sense to me. You'll have the best of both worlds!

Several months ago I found an enterprising blog packed full with creative idees and information. One in particular stood out from the crowd. Who wouldn't love making pretty tapes in a variety of sizes and widths.
The blog is called "Just something I made." Click here to visit the cute blog. I love the fact Cathe, the blog creator offers sources to purchase the items needed to make your own pretty, pretty tapes.
The tapes would be a fun winter craft project, I think.

I absolutely love this! If you're fortunate to have a vintage Christmas apron collection then why the heck wouldn't you show them off? Honestly, I see no logical reason why you would NOT!

How Calico Cute is this? Love the red and white. Two of my favorite colors when decorating. The gingham wall covering is to die for! It could have been too much, but the creator of this darling Calico kitchen has perfected the look with just the right amount of white trims, counters and appliances, Perfect, with a capital P, I say! New decorating term, "Cutie Patootie!"

Nosegay oh Nosegay where can you be?

A Calico favor to ask my readers... Have you seen this nosegay fabric? I purchased a few yards at a local fabric store a couple of years ago and have been on the search for the posy textile ever since!
I've searched high and low online but no luck finding this pattern.

The nosegay was the perfect choice for these handmade Calico's. Love mixing the blossoms with gingham.

♥ Soulful Gift

My friend Julie gave me this hand painted vintage jar for Christmas a couple of years ago. The jar was filled with an array of old ric-rac, trims and baubles and such. It was a joy to go through the jar exploring what its contents were.

I now store vintage notions and millinery flowers in the darling bluebird jar. I proudly perched her upon a shelf in the studio. Every time I look at the jar a smile appears on my face. What a thoughtful gift my friend gave to me.

Pretty Little Coasters

I'm trying to sneak in this handmade post. The recipient reads Bittersweet blog but I don't think she comes to Calico Petals.
Making these pretty little cloth coasters for her for Christmas. Easy to pull togerther and sew, minus the ric-rac and trims. They are a bit finicky to add.

I'm sewing an assortment of six. Two each of the same swatch and trims.
I think they will fit in with the other handmade gifts I'm making this year. Cocoa and homemade marshmallows, herbal vinegar, cranberry chutney, toffee, Scottish shortbread, and maybe if I have time some "hot pads" as my grandma would say.

If you want to try your hand at making the coasters. Cut a four inch square of two matching fabrics. Then cut another four inch square of interfacing. I had thin interfacing on hand so I tripled the cut. Insert trim or ric-rac in the inside and make sure two fabrics are front to front, place interfacing on top of one and carefully sew around the edges making sure you attach the layers. Turn inside out and poke corners with something sharp making sure not to tear corners. Sew a running stitch along all four finished sides.

Printing on paper bags

A friend added a tutorial picture on Pinterest on how to print on paper bags. I'm a seasoned print on whatever I can stick in my printer kind of girl. Fabric, heavy card stock and a number of other things have slipped through my printers over the years.

I must warn you. Depending on the type of ink jet printer you may have considers whether the job shall be daunting or simple and sweet.

I print every day with the operation of my business and have found over the years that some printers accept foreign objects better than others. I've found the inexpensive printers actually perform better than the more expensive ones. There's really no way to know if your printer is going to print on other things than paper unless you try it!
Sometimes you have to help push the object though so that it won't get caught and stuck.
I was using smaller paper bags that I purchase from a wholesale supplier and found the smaller bags would not allow me to feed through the printer without getting stuck and then I would have to pull them out. I do however believe a regular sized paper bag would be easier to maneuver.

Give it a try and let others no how it works for you.

Trimming with Doilies...

I've been adding doilie accents to my gift packaging. Seriously, who doesn't like a doilie? Last year for Christmas I made homemade cocoa and marshmallows and embellished the packaging with small round doilies. The recipients seemed to appreciate the gesture and the doilies added just the right touch.

Recently, I had a customer that ordered small containers of lavender laundry powders to be given as hostess gifts at an event. Once again, I incorporated the use of doilies.

So the next time you're wrapping gifts include a paper doilie.

Natural Wood

Although I'm fond of white washed furniture I'm equally fond of wood in its natural state. The picture above emphasises how mixing textures with a touch of modern retro and natural wood compliments each another in a modest way. The table becomes a focal point in the basic design. I prefer clean lines in decorating.

My home is filled with vintage wood pieces. Most of which have been passed down from generation to generation. For instance, the pie safe you see in this picture once sat in my Great Grandmothers kitchen. I can only imagine the variety of pies she baked and placed in the hutch to cool. The young children would probably sneak a chair and climb up to trial the treat by poking a finger through the flaky homemade crust as they anxiously awaited a piece of their own.

What about you? Do you like old furniture in its natural state?

Herbal Vinegars as gifts...

You may have traveled here by way of Bittersweet Soap blog. If you did this is the homemade gift idee that I wanted to share with my readers. If you jaunt over to Bittersweet you'll see the other ones.

Years ago I purchased pretty glass bottles and made herbal vinegar to give as gifts. The bottled vinegar was well received.

It's a fun easy gift to make but you will need to begin the process now for it to be ready by Christmas.

I'm going to purchase gallon size containers of vinegar and then add my herbs. I'll allow the mixture to season and brew a couple of months and then pour into glass vessels. I'll probably label them with contents and tie raffia or ribbon around the stem. If I have time I'll share some pdf vinegar labels with you.

I purchased this book a long time ago when I became interested in the idee.

You really don't need a special book though to make herbal vinegar.

I'm picking rosemary, basil and parsley from my garden and then adding gourmet garlic I purchased from my friend Peg, (aka garlic lady.)

Did you know there are tons of varieties? I like the spicy hot ones to put in vinegars. I also prefer hard neck garlics over soft neck. Most supermarket garlics are soft neck variety.

If you don't have access to gourmet garlic, store bought garlic is just fine to use.

The herbal vinegar blend is a wonderful staple to have on hand. It's herbal infusion may be used to make special salad dressings and marinades.

Sweet Applesauce

I remember growing up watching my grandma Lola make homemade applesauce. I'm certain if my grandmother were still around she'd have already picked her plump juicy apples in anticipation of making a large bowl of the sweet Autumn treat.

I also remember right after she cooked and prepared the apples and added the perfect amount of cinnamon and sugar to the naturally sweet fruit she would spoon me a bowl of the delicious warm treat.

Sometimes she would add a few drops of red coloring and make it pink.

The pink applesauce always seemed to taste better than the plain colored one!

Grandma Lola owned a cafe for many years in small town America. Lola's Cafe.

Although I was too young to remember those restaurant days friends and family stories have been kindly passed down as well as pictures of my dad as a young boy sitting at the counter with his best friend. My grandma and grandpa are in the background.

Homemade Applesauce

a recipe from the internet

I would increase apples. Doesn't seem that this would make too much.

Ingredients

4 apples - peeled, cored and chopped

3/4 cup water

1/4 cup white sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

1.In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher.

painted floors

Have you ever considered painting your wood floors or linoleum? Maybe they're in less than perfect condition and you would like a cost effective way to spruce them up. I would suggest painting them!
It takes little time, more prep work than anything, and the finished result should have you smiling.

First you need to decide on whether you want an all over color or a specific design.

Designs take a bit more time, but worth it. All over floor painting can go pretty quick.

Start with an enamel paint. Depending on the color you choose, you may need to apply more than one coat of paint. Allow the freshly painted floor to dry completely, usually 24 hours is recommended and then apply 3 to 4 coats of varnish. If you want a shiny floor like the picture above you will need to apply a high gloss varnish. If you prefer a more satin finish then you need to cover with a satin or matte varnish.

After you've applied the varnish, allow to dry for another 24 hours.

Place a fan on the completed floor to speed up the process.

Painting old wood floor white is one of my favorites.

If done correctly, they will last for many years to come.

Calico Kitchen

Someday in addition to the calico cookbook I'd like to publish a "Calico Kitchen" idee book. The books pages would be filled with charming calico's and gingham's like the picture above. A different take on the norm you see nowadays in all the magazines. An original Calico Kitchen.

Color pallets of pink, green and blue would suffice with floral touches here and there.

White washed wood floors and floral motif wall covering would fit the bill.

When I dream of my Calico Kitchen those thoughts come to mind.

Autumn Packaging

Getting you in the mood even more!

It's almost apple picking time!
Seems an appropriate time to share with you my apple dumpling recipe.
This recipe is the old-fashioned one with real thick gooey caramel sauce drizzled over the dumpling, YUMMY!
Easy to make too. Takes a little while to prepare the dough but worth it, I believe to serve this special autumn treat to family and friends.

Amish Apple Dumplings 8 servings

Prep: 40 minutes

Bake: 45 minutes

Cook: 14 minutes

Cool: 10 minutes

Stand: 10 minutes

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1-1/4 cups shortening

1 egg, lightly beaten

1/4 cup cold water

1 tablespoon vinegar

8 small cooking apples (about 2 pounds)

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

2/3 cup whipping cream

1/2 cup butter, cut up

2 tablespoons light-colored corn syrup

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/3 cup whipping cream

Directions

1. For pastry: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until pieces are the size of small peas. In a small bowl, combine egg, the 1/4 cup cold water and vinegar. Stir egg mixture into flour mixture until all of the dough is moistened. Form dough into a ball. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. (Dough will be slightly sticky.)

2. Divide dough in half. Turn one portion dough out onto a well-floured surface. Roll to form a 12x12-inch square. Using pastry wheel or sharp knife, cut into four 6-inch squares.

3. Peel and core 4 apples. Place an apple on each pastry square. Fold corners to center over apple. Pinch edges to seal. Place dumplings in a greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Repeat with remaining pastry and apples.

4. Bake in a 350 degree F oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until apples are tender and pastry is golden brown. Cool at least 10 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, for caramel sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, 2/3 cup whipping cream, and corn syrup. Bring to boiling, stirring occasionally; reduce heat to medium. Boil gently, uncovered, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Transfer to a bowl; cover and set aside to cool slightly. Makes 8 servings.

6. To serve, in a chilled small bowl, whip 1/3 cup cream to soft peaks. Serve warm dumplings with caramel sauce and whipped cream.

The original plan was to offer my collection of vintage prop items once used for displays in Bittersweet shop.

All too often plans get tossed to the side simply because there's so much going on in our lives.

Design work and Bittersweet Soap takes up most of my day.

If I'm not making soap, I'm designing web sites and logo's for clients.

I know, I know, lucky girl! I really do count my blessings each and every day!

so....

The plan of sharing those vintage goods has been placed on the back burner for awhile until further notice.

Autumn is my busiest time of year and preparation's have already been put into place to get ready for the holiday season.

It's always exciting at Calico and Bittersweet around the holidays. We host a holiday open house and our signature scents of the season premier both on the web site and studio.

Calico Petals blog posts will be going back in time reflecting on the real life stories that unfold. Possibly down the road, we will begin listing our vintage goods again, but for now it's business as usual. Well, if you're familiar with Bittersweet or Calico and are an avid reader you know business as usual is what we do best!

I'm really looking forward to fall!

I have been a shoppe owner for over 14 years.
My vintage collection offers a variety of items that were once used as merchandise props or displays mostly.

The vintage goods available are a calico blend of essentials some quite rare while other's more common, but nevertheless your choices range from cute, shabby, cottage, prairie and antique.

Each piece that I offer holds a special place in my vintage loving heart, but having said, there is no way I can keep everything! My lower level of my home also functions as a studio and merchandising area and the space is small so every little inch matters. It brings comfort to know that each treasured piece I offer will find a lovely new home!

This is how it works...
Each week I will add new pieces to the offering. An individual item will remain on the blog for 1 week only and will display final showing date below the item. After that, it will no longer be available.

For everyone who wished we'd get lots of snow this winter. Your wish has come true threefold! A powerful blizzard is soon to move through Calico Petals and I'm beginning to wish and yearn for an early spring!
Thoughts of lavender and butterflies, forget me not and lush green grass linger in my mind.

Indoor spring thoughts are taking shape at the studio regardless of the snowy landscape outside.

Spring always brings fresh ideas and creations and is my favorite time at Bittersweet and Calico.

Those pondering thoughts of colorful blooms and pretty flutter bugs will be confined to indoors. Bittersweet's new spring line, "Botanical Blooms" is sprouting and it's roots are boldly escaping their boundaries! I can't wait to put it all together!

♥ Heart Felt Thoughts about Handmade...

This is the busy production time of year for both Calico and Bittersweet. It's also my favorite time. After Christmas, I begin working on new spring creations for both small handmade companies.

It feels as though my winters have been spent creating forever. In fact, I can't recall when I didn't entertain the idea. I guess 14 years of making stuff for a living would be considered a long period of time. I am very fortunate to have such a soulful occupation. I try to count my blessings each and every day.

I was thinking the other day about how I've always been so easily bored doing the same thing. I have never had a long attention span. Although I'm kind of doing the same thing, creating the new spring lines. I never get bored because I'm allowed to design new ones!

I began to think about how each year I contemplate the ideas and how I employ and implement each one.

A considerable amount of time goes into marketing of each item as well as packaging.
In fact, packaging, presentation and marketing are definitely the top three ingredients for making or breaking your sales.

Everything I make needs to stand out from the crowd, so to speak. Price points are also important. Depending where you live, pricing can be tricky. I live in the Midwest.
I became more aware of price points after owning a shop for 5 years.

Living in the Midwest does have its downfalls when it comes to selling handmade.
Handmade just hasn't gotten the respect it deserves in my part of the world. Those are personal thoughts, but ones I believe to be true from experience.
So, how do you combat such nonsense? What are some tricks from the trade?

I would say the top three components in running a successful handmade business must include the following.

Passion, No 1
Persistence, Always
Perseverance, Never give up, EVER!
There are going to be times you think you should, but that is when you should begin seriously thinking about not quitting.
I forgot a very important component!
Always listen to those little voices and trust your judgment. If you make a wrong move, which you will, then you learn from that experience and move on. Don't dwell on it.

The experience will help you to make wiser decisions on down the road.

There you have it. My personal advise for running a successful handmade business.

Two hugs are better than one

For the love of snow and an established neighborhood...

If you have visited Bittersweet blog then you know that this is my neighbors beautiful estate across the street.
We've lived in our home for 22 years and during that long time period so has Mrs. P., the owner of the stately old house.
When we first moved to our 1921 home most of our neighbors were elderly. Now they have passed and new occupants have moved in with the exception of Mrs. P.
Her home is always picture perfect in the snow. She has Bittersweet growing along her fence in front that I admire each Fall. A fruit cellar and carriage house that sits on the acreage, all lovely and admired from across the street.

Today I'll enjoy making a large pot of gumbo. I don't use a recipe, but in case you want to make some this is the ingredients I have used to make it for many years.

Cook whole preferably organic chicken in large stock pot until done. Do not discard broth, save for gumbo. While chicken is cooking in another pan, pour 2 - 3 T. of peanut oil in pan and add 3'4 cup of diced celery, onion, green pepper 2 cloves garlic.
Saute those ingredients for 5 minutes.
When chicken is done, de-bone and return to broth. Add sauteed veggies and garlic.
Pour in 1 can stewed tomatoes and organic chicken broth if you like lots of broth.
Add, 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp. oregano, 1 tsp. thyme, 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp. salt, dash pepper.
Cook on low covered for two hours or more. Add okra, I use a large bag.
Allow to cook for another hour or so. When ready to eat add two cups of cooked rice, brown or white, your choice.
Serve with crusty garlic bread.

Two hugs are most always better than one

If you read Bittersweet's blog then you'll know how I recently changed the look of my living room and fireplace mantle. You will also know the oval picture above is an actual photo of my great grandmother's family as well as my second cousins great grandmother.
I am so very blessed to have a collection of these old photographs and treasure each and every one of them.
I'm now on the hunt for two small antique mirrors to hang on each side of the picture, creamy to match the look and add cohesiveness.
I've also put in a request to my carpenter husband to build enclosed book cases on each side of the fireplace.
Finally, my book collection in one handy place. I will love that and I'm so very excited to have it.
He has however informed me that we have a number of home projects that take priority over the cabinets, one being the painting of our vintage home. We were planning on painting last year, but somehow it got away from us and we postponed it to this year.
Our home is not an easy home to paint. It's 1920 stucco and the home itself stands over 40 feet in two sides.
Luckily for my husband I'm not afraid of heights and can assist him in the house painting, prepping.
We have lived in our home for 22 years this February. I love my home! Although ownership of an older home automatically comes with continual maintenance. Again, luckily for my husband I have experience in most carpenter skills and enjoy the before and after of old home projects.

I have cut and layed quarter round trim around hard wood floors that we did ourselves, messy by the way, the re-do of wood floors. Knocked out walls, kind of fun, hung sheet rock, not my favorite thing, the mudding and taping, yuk! Installed new cabinets, ceiling to counter, painted the exterior many many times, and too the interior almost as often as I change clothes. Cut and placement of new cedar molding around exterior windows, new storms. The list goes on and on.... The painting,,,
Always go back to neutral colors it seems.
We've installed new dishwasher, furnace, air conditioner, gutters, hot water heater, thermostat, a new roof, driveway, major landscaping. All of which since it's been 22 years is time to start that list over!

Doing the work myself gives me a feeling of contentment and pride.
This year I hope to experience more hard work and those same feelings.

Two hugs are better than one

Slowly back in the groove...

Refreshing as it's been to have time off and to do nothing, I'm also ready to get back to work! I'm not a nothing to do kind of girl. I'm happiest when I'm busy. Don't hold it against me please, it's an inherited trait I believe.

Baking up some yummy deserts for family has been enjoyable. Have I told you how if I weren't a soap maker I would be a baker?

After I made these the other day Lennis came to me and said, "I believe this has been my most favorite baked good you've ever made!" Who knew? I used to make them all the time before we met!

We each indulged fork in hand and ate every bite of one of these with a smile on our face and an occasional, yummy undertone heard throughout the sweet home.
I then realized after I gobbled down the sweet treat that it was quite similar to eating an entire pie.
The recipe calls for a double crust pie dough, enough to make 4 dumplings, so yes, it is truly like eating a pie by yourself!
A little desert therapy now and then never hurt anyone! In fact, I'm sure it to be good for the soul. Indeed....

Winter vacation re-visited....

Every year about this time Bittersweet and Calico Petals takes a long winter vacation. The studio closes through the month of January and life in general is at a much slower pace.

The winter rest is not typical of what most refer to a a vacation, but rather a time to reflect on current business thoughts as well as future ones. Mostly the time is spent pondering and creating new designs for Spring.

This coming spring will bring with it a seasoned 14 years of owning my own business.

I have numerous stories and real life business experiences within my possession that I consider to be a metaphor of a trunk filled with precious treasure.

Although I've always taken the path less walked, not yearning to be big and mass produced, and realizing which opportunities were right and which were wrong has always been the most valuable lesson learned. Both businesses have been operated by instinct and grit, with many stop to smell the flowers along the way.

As the old year closes and the new one approaches I feel blessed and honored to continue to stroll along the winding road.

Sometimes not knowing what's behind the next turn can be overwhelming and unsure. An occasional trip is sure to happen.

The most important lesson I've learned...

Never quit what you love to do!

There are always new treasures awaiting your discovery alone, and although cliche, I do really believe. If the going gets tough, then yes, the tough get going!

That's what you're made of, right?

Sugar Plums Danced in my Head...

I've been rummaging through studio pictures from this past summer. It's always bittersweet to look at these photos and reminisce about past creations.

The "Flirty Frocks" were a favorite summer creation.

Creating new handmade is always a satisfying feeling.

The months of December and January are usually centered on the focus of new spring and summer creations. I look through pattern books and search fabric swatches for new ideas and looks.

I've always considerd Bittersweet and Calico to have their own style. Every attempt is made not to copy or duplicate other creations.

Although I like some of the designs I see in magazines, I really don't want to saturate the market with similar creations.

Making a living from creating with my hands is beyond rewarding.

It's always so very soul satisfying when a customer contacts me to say the still have a handmade Bittersweet or Calico from many years ago.

Fourteen years ago when I quit my secure weekly paycheck job I had no idea what the future held.

Although it's been challenging at times as the owner of a small business, I've never looked back or had one single regret.

If you're a maker of handmade and hold down a regular job but are desperately wanting to make the big plunge I say "go for it!"

Through passion and hard work you're destined to be a success!

Always trust your instincts. That's the best advise I can offer.

Using smell good natural tinctures and days gone by aromatic additives helps to make normal hum drum household chores a pleasant home keeping pleasure.

Chutney Love...

I'm not a seasoned canner, but every time this year I prepare and can fresh jars of Cranberry Chutney to give as gifts to my friends and family.
The recipe only makes 6 half pint jars so I'm fastidious in choosing who receives a jar.

I love this simple recipe and using fresh cranberries to make it.

Canning is not difficult to do. Mostly time consuming. I don't use any special tools or gadgets to can. I have a large stainless still pan for boiling the jars and then remove them with a wooden spoon handle. That's kind of funny to watch, me maneuvering the glass jars on a narrow handle, but nevertheless it works.

Personally, I would much rather receive a handmade gift for Christmas over anything else!

Photo Arrangement's...

I enjoyed using the outdoors for

product shooting last summer. You can't beat the lighting and sharp detail that natural light produces in pictures. This is one of my favorite shots. I had just picked the hydrangea's and their mossy green and powder blue variegated display brought joy to my eyes.

Using the old tattered scale as a prop was even more fun.

I tend to lean toward a simple less cluttered look rather than a bunch of stuff gathered.

It's cold outside now and winter is settling in for a spell. I don't think I'll be taking any outdoor product shots soon, but as soon as Spring ushers in her warm breeze I'll be back at it.

I recently designed a sign for a friends business kind of similar to the pictures above.

Still some tweaking to do, but this is the prototype sign for her new boutique.

I really like it. I also designed another sign for her second business. The two boutiques will be back and back with one another. Kind of tricky when designing signs so close to one another, but these are going to look grand!

I'd like to introduce you to my friend Kelly. She's the proprietress of Farmstead.
Kelly has one of the most prettiest most unique farms you'll ever see!
Farmstead has horses, chickens, a beautiful barn, stunning out buildings that are move in ready, tents decked out for cozy camping with girlfriends complete with old fashioned tub.
She also offers creative retreats each month. At the retreats you can learn how to make a variety of handmade things.

When I had my shop downtown Kelly opened a shop next door. We became shop neighbors and friends during that time.
She's since closed her shop as did I and we're both branching out in exciting directions.
I'll be working with Kelly on some logo design work this week. Her new adventure is still hush, hush so I can't spill the beans. Darn it, don't you hate that?

October Mood

I"m very fortunate to have access to my rich family history.
Believe it or not my uncle has traced my family back to 1200 where we came from Pakistan. Yes, I know it just doesn't seem possible to go back that many generations, but we have.
We then go to England, France and Germany and Ireland. The history is quite interesting to say the least. This is on my Dad's side of the family.

My Mother's side doesn't go back quite that far, but nevertheless I do have a record back to 1700 or so.
If you have little or no knowledge of you family's past, I would highly encourage you to investigate a bit and dig up some family history.

I enjoy looking at my family's history books and keepsakes to learn a bit more about how they lived during different decades.

It's very satisfying to know about my great, great, great ancestors.

Pondering once again...and again....and again...and again....

Oh yes, my favorite past time pondering random thoughts of marketing, branding and creating. Usually includes right brain overload, or is it left? Doesn't matter I guess. Sorry, I was born this way! I'm not really sorry either, cause that's the way God made me and I'm honored and blessed and count those dear blessings every single day!

Well, Miss Jill so glad you spoke your mind on that!

Designing and branding for my two cottage companies also tops the favorite lists on what I love to do.

So many ways to go too.

Victorian, Vintage, Retro, Contemporary, Cottage, Country and the list goes on.

When I begin creating a logo the first thing I begin pondering is whether that image, design will appeal to most.

For instance...

Some folks don't like country and some dislike Victorian. If they happen upon your logo and disfavor the look of it then chances are they move on down the road.

I always try to convey this message to my clients.

Bottom line is you want your brand to stand out and attract everyone, right?

Anyway, this is something I've learned along the way and I now consider it to be one of the most important components when designing anything.

Contemplating designs for Calico Petals. Just wrapped up something new for Bittersweet.

The three words under my company title ring true to my heart!

Always follow your gut, it's never wrong!

Show Ready...

This is a shot from last fall when Bittersweet and Calico Petals participated in a showing of their wares when Vintage Market hosted temporary events at Zona Rosa. VM no longer hosts these special showcase events and I really do miss them.
It was fun to be surrounded by kindred spirits and be next to my friend Julie, who also did the shows.
It's hard to believe how fast time goes by and how it's already this time again but a year later.
I don't have any shows planned this fall other than our annual open house the first week of November when the holiday soaps make their debut.
The pinny apron was always popular at this show.

a pinny for your thoughts...

I have been offering the pinny apron at Calico Petals and Bittersweet for a few years now. They are copied from a 1967 McCall's apron pattern that my friend Sharon, (aka the pattern fairy) shared with me several years ago. Sharon teaches sewing if that tells you anything. She's an excellent teacher. Although I have never experienced her teaching class first hand, I can tell by our visits that she is patient and very knowledgeable about all aspects of sewing including sewing machine tips.

I on the other hand am stubborn when it comes to learning new things. I have always been a hands on gal. In fact I will tell you a little secret...
I flunked out of sewing in home economics class. I hated it! I preferred wood working class. Give me a band saw and a chunk of walnut and I can create a lovely coffee table!

Present day and realizing how things do change, don't they?

I love to sew now! No I'm not an expert on the craft, but I do give it my all when I create a new piece. French seams, blanket stitch and blind hem stitch all terms in my vocabulary now and if you want to strike up a conversation with me just mention any of the above!

I have probably made and sold 100 or so of the pinny.
I believe a great way to learn how to do something is by doing it over and over and over. Eventually you get the hang of it. Then you can move on to another sewing project and follow the same guidelines.

It's funny... Nowadays I sew hats, purses, aprons, frocks and the list goes on.
I love looking at the apron hall tree filled with fresh pinny's.

So for you girls out there that would like to sew but think you can't. Know that you can! I believe it's a matter of timing. In fact I believe that philosophy holds true with just about everything in life. I will spare you with my long drawn out philosophical debates.

The studio is taking on a mellow mood lately.
This is a busy time of year for both Calico Petals and Bittersweet Soap.
Full throttle soap manufacturing kick in next week and the design details for this seasons holiday soap wrappings are beginning to take shape.

This is a picture was taken 5 years ago or so when I had the boutique downtown.
It's funny how some of the packaging comes back around.

It's strange how my taste has changed since then. I do still like the black and white shopping bags. They became a wonderful marketing tool. Everyone knew they were Bittersweet bags and it was a thrill to see them here and there hanging on customers arms as they browsed merchant windows.

My friend Linda took and created this picture of my store front when I first opened. What a great days gone by picture that fills my mind with happy shop owner memories.

Gifts from friends...

I feel blessed to have caring and sharing customers/friends that honor and treat me with gifts.
Last Saturday a customer and friend, Marcy presented me with this adorable vintage bunny.
She also shared the story that came with the rabbit which made the gift even more special.
She had spotted the vintage bunny at a thrift shop years ago when her daughter was a wee one.
Marcy said the little pink rabbit had sat in her daughters nursery when she was a baby.
She recently began to clean out some of the old and thought it appropriate to return the rabbit to the thrift store in which it was purchased so many years before.
She returned to the thrift shop some weeks later only to find the pastel rabbit was still sitting on the shelf at the thrift shop.
She was saddened to see that no one had purchased the vintage rabbit.
Knowing that the thrift shop destroys items after a certain amount of time she quickly picked up the rabbit and purchased it once again.
She presented me with the sweet bunny and told me that story.
I am thrilled to have the ceramic rabbit as he proudly sits atop the apothecary cabinet in my shop.

Keepsake Box

I've talked about the little keepsake boxes Bittersweet makes before and how the original idee came from my creative Mom.
My Mom said, "Jill, you need a little box for the soap to fit into." That's a great idea, I said, and the little box was born. Appropriately called, "soap box" around the studio since a bar of my hand crafted soap fits perfectly inside the box.

Over the past thirteen years and since Bittersweet was established I've made thousands of these little boxes.
When I had the shop downtown they sold as fast as I could make them.

It was funny to see the soap box assembly line sitting on my kitchen counter, in the dining room, and in every corner.
I always made them in the same order. Decoupage, allow to dry, paint, allow to dry, varnish, glass glitter, and once again allow to dry. A few secrets too that I learned while creating the little box.

I was thrilled when HGTV called and wanted to feature the little box on their network. They called shortly after my Mom had passed away from Leukemia, and it meant so very much to me to share a creation that came from her especially on national television. I feel blessed to have had that wonderful experience.

Let's see, that was probably 8 or 9 years ago. I'm always amazed on how fast time goes.

So nice of them to still have the episode featured on their web site. Thanks HGTV, especially to you Celia!

Not so stuffie...

It's a true blessing to be able to create and make things for a living. I've never taken one moment of the blessings for granted.

Having worked as a bank manager, code inspector and marketing director in my younger days allowed me to appreciate and respect the precious gift that comes with creating.

Not that those jobs were disliked. I enjoyed and respected each of them without a doubt, and learned a considerable amount from each.

Having said that I also know that my yearning to create has and always will not only offer a source of bread & butter, but a true genuine feeling of peace that helps me go become a better human.

As I sit and begin creating a soulful interlude of happiness runneth over my entire psyche.

The quiet pluck and tuck moments are ever so soft and nurturing.

Vintage Postcard Pocket

Forget- Me- Nots...

A single stem of a forget-me-not stands tall. I do believe this is my favorite little flower!
Even though considered a spring blooming flower the plant seems to be holding up in scorching 100 degree heat.
The blessing with this flowering blue is that most always when planted it does not flower until the following season. Having said that, I felt privileged to have this lovely bloom appear with the first planting.
Next spring, early I am going to plant oodles of this favorite blue and yellow blossom!
I'm engrossed with the folklore tales and ancient stories that surround this delicate beauty of nature.

The forget-me-not flower lives on forever in my mind.

Those Lavender Sachets

They are so sweet! Tuck a berry here, tuck a berry there.

Calico Petals and Bittersweet and Jill for that matter have always had a liking for any kind of lavender stuffed sachet.

The skies the limit on what to use for fabric. Vintage textiles make soulful little sachets.

Seal the berry with a hand sewn topper.

There's something about hand sewn items. They make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Pretty Hat Box

Pretty Paper continued...

Along with pretty paper comes all sorts of charming tags.

These tags were made with some of my favorite fabric remnants.

Purchase ready made manila tags

Cut fabric in small enough to piece over tag

Spray fabric with adhesive

gently place onto tag and smooth with fingers

Cut around tag

Using a hole punch, follow hole on tag and punch through fabric to match

Insert vintage ribbon, rope or string

Pretty Paper...

Most of you are like me and love pretty papers. While out and about I'm always on the look out for vintage wallpaper and bits & pieces of unusual paper items.

The fascination with pulp traces back to when I was a young girl. I remember my collection of paper stationary to this day. One of my favorites was scented paper.

The paper doesn't necessarily have to be old for me to love. Nowadays, there are so many to choose from.

When I finish client design work I always fold their work into a pretty file folder like the ones above.

If you've never made hand-made paper before, I encourage you to. It's a fun summer craft.

Just tear up small pieces of newspaper or whatever paper you have on hand and place the pieces in blender. Add enough water to make a thick paste. Pour your pasty mixture onto large cookie sheets and place outdoors in a shady spot to dry for a day or two.

You can add flower blossoms or rose petals from your summer garden if you like.

Once your paper tray is completely dry. Peel and enjoy!

Basket full of love...

This wire basket is filled with lovely hand-made items, some of which I've made. The beginnings of a quilt that I began way back when, lavender sachets, cherry picked hangers, and one of my favorite hand-made flea market find, the embroidery booties.

As I gaze at its contents I think to myself someday I will finish that quilt! I also ponder warm thoughts of love as my eyes wander over the pretty hues.

You probably have a basket very similar to mine. One that contains freshly hatched creations.

One day when we're old and gray we will think back on this basket full of love, and realize its significance.

Saturday Studio changes under way...

Well I've began the re-do on the studio. I guess the word re-do isn't an accurate description of the task. Maybe the word restructuring is a better fit.

I have however began the very long process of sorting, separating, putting away items that aren't used regularly, unless their cute of course, then I want to be able to see them.

Since my studio is also my shop, and a small space, I wobble back and forth with practicality, functionality and merchandising. All of which, reflect my personality and feeling of well being.

This is the working room part of my studio. I very seldom share. This is where I create. I guess the reason I don't disclose is simple. It's usually a total mess! I make over one-hundred hand crafted items! There's no way it's going to be orderly. Usually stacks of freshly cut soap bars line the walls, and fabric stacked high from work in progress and new designs.

This little corner of the work room however usually stays the same. I think it's good to have a corner that never changes.

My Mom's wooden bench fluffed with softness. My favorite little lamp. All my baubles and bows in clear glass jars so that I can see what I have, cause I sometime forget!

It's the best of both worlds I believe having your shop in your home.

After all, home is where the heart is!

Summer Studio

I plucked this little vintage apron from my friend Julie's shop.

The petite size apron is very old. I'm guessing from the 1920's, my favorite era!

Keepsake Box

I began making these little boxes some thirteen years ago when Bittersweet was first founded. The original idea came from my creative Mother. She said I needed a little box to hold a bar of soap. She was right, I did!
The original prototype was made using left over wallpaper pieces.

Today the box is embellished with vintage pictures.
Over the years I have made thousands of these little boxes, and continue to make them. They have become somewhat of a trademark item @ Bittersweet.
Every time I paint and create a little box I think back those many years ago when the first one was made. How they've been tried and true. The different paths they've crossed. How they were once the hot item lined on store shelves.

Then how when I had my own store, customer's purchased the little boxes, picking and choosing their perfect little box, and filling their baskets.
I guess you would categorize the keepsake box as folk art, but for me they're a timeless treasure.

Cottage Spring...

Sprucing up the studio with remnants of spring.

I picked up this cute sign the other day for hardly nothing.

I made this little bird house a few years ago. I had no idea how time consuming to cut the fabric to fit the odd shaped bird house.

I sprayed it with some glass glitter and have it resting next to the lavender bundles.

This is a picture of my laundry area/studio. As you can tell by the picture it's both functional and resourceful.

Don't you love the Cami? I have had that for a very long time. It looks nice atop the sassy aprons, I think.

Isn't this round ottoman the cutest? I just love it!
The ottoman is a piece I fancy from the Vintage Market.

What is the Vintage Market?
A flea market style boutique located in Kansas City. It's filled with layers of not just old, but new & unique too.

Vintage Market is owned and managed by my friend Kim.
Kim and I met years back when I had the shop downtown. Now, I do the design work for her unique business. Funny how that kind of stuff happens, isn't it?

What can I say about my friend Kim?
Let's see if I can give you a description of my friend.

She's a go getter for one! She's also honest, stuffed full with integrity and kindness, and sincerely cares how others feel. I believe those are rare traits rarely found in most serious minded business woman. If you know what I mean???
For most it's difficult to balance and mix those qualities with real business, and it takes a special person to pull it off in a feng shui kind of way.

She's also the hardest working woman, this side of the Missouri River!
I thought no one had me beat on high energy, but Miss Kim does!

So my Calico friends, if you're ever in KC, don't forget to stop by the Vintage Market. I know you'll find a treasure or two.

Spring

Spring is my favorite season.
Lilacs, snowball bushes, tulips, daffodils, they're some of my favorites.

Tuberose blooms later in the season, but a favorite also. It's pungent aroma is sweet almost jasmine like with lily like blooms.
Spring soaps are curing, French Clay and Lemon Verbena are the perfect fresh scents for spring.

I bet you're planning your garden, and picking your favorite plants.
The beginning of spring, and the anticipation of its arrival is beyond words.

Blue & White String Cards

I had several of you contact me about the blue & white string that is included in the ephemera kit.
It is bakers twine and it is a wonderful crafty tool to have around.
The string cards I designed on the computer, and then cut them out making little slits for the ends of the string to be pulled through.
You can purchase a large block of it here. You may find some other cool things there too for your crafty projects.

Practical Pinnie...

What is it about these pinnies that draw me in? Could it be their style, practicality, design? Yes, all that!
I sew as many pinnies as time allows. I usually make at least two with the same fabric, sometimes keeping one for myself.

My kitchen is filled with pinnies hanging here and there. I think they add a certain charm.

When I gaze over at the hanging pinnie I can't help but think about baking,and creating, and home keeping and experimenting with new recipes.

Occasionally, I even ponder new soap formulations while wearing the practical pinnie.
Soap making is very similar to baking.

The pinnies will be premiering for a limited time @ Bittersweet.

another time, another place

You've heard the phrase before. Maybe if I were in another time or another place.

I'm constantly pondering creative changes within my mind, thinking how would that look in another time and place? H'm...
My other time and place prefers pink, red and blue.

What's not to like about that trio?

Pretty girly colors with pretty spring blossoms and little blue birds poking their heads into another place and time, all along knowing it's the perfect place to roost.

Do you know why I'm so fond of this picture?
That pretty pink chiffon dress looked pretty back then and continues to hold it's beauty today. Don't you love that? I do! Isn't that how vintage pieces are suppose to make you feel? Kind of like that feeling you get when you watch an old Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly movie,kinda.

Vintage Handkerchiefs

I've been pondering some thoughts on handkerchiefs. The mere thought of them brings back memories of my stays at my Grandmother Lola's house. Just as my admiration for fragrance as a young girl, memories of hankies in my Grandmother's dresser drawer softly carry me back to childhood too, as I fondly remember gazing inside her lovely designated spot that neatly housed her beautiful linen and colorful cotton collections.

I ponder the thought of why I was so fondly drawn to them.

Quite possibly just the fact that Grandma used them. Or maybe when I opened that dresser drawer for the first time I was drawn to the colorful petite sized fabric.

H'm......

Such a green thing to do, carry a handkerchief! So way before their time,
and I get that same sweet soulful feeling like I do when I see a vintage apron. You know the feeling I'm talking about don't you?

I imagine there's Lot's of crafty things to do with handkerchiefs.
Personally for me, I like to do just like my Grandma did. Use them, and keep them in my dresser drawer.

Sometimes it's the little things in life that make it so very special.

Colorful Correspondence

Ah, the long lost art of letter writing and corresponding through the mail.. Definitely not lost with this girly girl when there's so many pretty candy colored stationery's to choose from nowadays, h'm.

The one's above from this company.

When I was growing up I remember how much I loved to sit and write letters to friends that had moved away. My best friend Linda would send me letters on smiley faced paper,and I just loved reading and receiving her letters filling me in on all that had happened to her and her family.

Then about that same time, the seventy's, scented stationary, really loved that being a fragrance girl from way back you see.

Now I'm pondering thoughts like, who could I send a letter to right now so I can use this cheery flower petal colored papier? Who??

Sassafras

Another sassafras apron completed and many more in production.
I have been thinking, pondering, wondering just how I am going to display these aprons at the upcoming shows I'm participating in and all of a sudden it came to me!
While thinking about it I knew the display piece needed to be different, something that would fit in, but yet stand out from the crowd.
After careful thought it came to me...
A ivy wrapped twig ladder, yeah that will be perfect!
Lennis is constructing the ladder for me out of fallen red bud limbs and I can't wait to show you a preview with all the sassafras's folded over the ivy covered branches.
I think you'll like it!

Marketing the new cookbook

Most cookbook publishers have a publicist to promote their book. I however did not. Well I guess that's not entirely true. I am the publicist!

You see when you write a book, whatever that book may be, the popularity of the book depends on the content, but too, centers around how the book was marketed.

For instance, If Oprah said a book was good on her television talk show, I think you get the point.

If you've traveled over to Bittersweet Blog and read some of my posts, you've heard me talk about the importance of refined marketing.
It's as simple as this..
The more people that pick up your book, usually drawn from the cover by the way, then a look inside, they think to themselves, I think I'd like to add this book to my library, SOLD!

I'll be promoting my cookbook during the market events at Zona Rosa. I will also be doing a book signing in November! I'm really excited about a book signing!!!

The picture above is a postcard. I had postcards made that look like the cover of the book. I'll be handing them out to customers in the next few weeks.

I can't wait to see the finished product!

Summer

During my relax mode I took a few Summer pics. The bumble bee was an added bonus!

I know some of you are experiencing the worst Summer heat and I feel for you because I know what HOT SUMMERS are like, hate em! For those of us in the Midwest though, it's been mild and quite pleasant and almost early Autumn like.

I love collecting vintage botanical prints.

The detail and design are far above most prints made today, I believe.
